When TriOS Mess- und Datentechnik GmbH was founded in 1998, the further development was not foreseeable. With the early R & D project under the project name RAMSES, which was funded by the BMBF (Federal Ministry of education and Research), the company laid the cornerstone for its future success in optical metrology already in its foundation phase.
RAMSES was the first hyperspectral light meter for use in marine research, available on the market. Today, with over a thousand devices in use worldwide – the clear No. 1 in the world – the product name “RAMSES” has become a synonym for compact, robust and reliable light-measurements. The devices are routinely used for measuring light distribution in a water column as well as for validation and calibration of modern environmental satellite data (e.g. MERIS). The sensors have proven their reliability under many adverse environmental conditions such as in Antarctica, but also on unusual locations like offshore racing yachts in the Volvo Ocean Race. Many Norway tourists are accompanied by the instruments, even if not consciously perceived, on their journey along the fjords, on board of the ships of the Hurtigruten.
Today the former University spin-off, guided by Rüdiger Heuermann alone since 2000, has become a leader in the field of optical immersion sensors. In addition to the original RAMSES-radiometers, the TriOS product range has rapidly expanded. It was followed by submersible fluorometers (microFlu and enviroFlu) and photometers (ProPS, VIPER, OSCAR), which expanded the business of TriOS Mess- und Datentechnik GmbH far beyond the field of marine technology. Nowadays the business operates in water quality monitoring of drinking water and waste water and other various industrial applications. Inter alia TriOS is one of the leading companies in the field of oil-in-water monitoring and thus makes a significant contribution to the reduction of pollution from oil spills.
By expanding the product range and increasing the number of units produced, the need for production areas and qualified staff grew. The consequence was a relocation to Rastede in July 2011, where the newly built headquarters are nowadays. Here, not only the workshop, laboratory and office space significantly increased, TriOS now also has its own mechanics manufacturing and has therefore become more independent. The number of employees rose from 3 (1998) to currently 57 employees (2016).
TriOS remained faithful to its natural drive for innovation. The latest sensor TriOS released is LISA – a SAC254 probe. The device is characterized not only by energy saving UV LED technology, but also by the easy configuration through the innovative TriOS G2 interface. In addition, novel sensors for environmental parameters in cooperation with universities and research institutions are being developed in several research projects. Many of our customers are also partners in the development of new products.
